A personal journal and a shared reading list need different boundaries. Entaggle gives you choices for each note, in words that tell you who may read it.

Choose where it lives
Save on your device, in a connected Hub, or with cloud sync. The destination and privacy choices work together.
Choose how far it can go
Each note has a readable privacy setting, from “Only this device” through broader access. Each broader level includes the access allowed below it.
Cloud sync without outside AI
Choose a setting that allows cloud sync without allowing outside AI to receive that note. Text and tag search remain available.
Make an informed AI choice
Using outside AI can send note content to another service. Review the note’s privacy setting and the service’s terms before enabling that access.
Share with intention
Gather notes into a collection and choose when to share it. Sharing options include password protection and an expiry date.
Keep working offline
Write, edit, and find notes stored on your device without a connection. Online services and some embedded content still need internet access.

A Hub keeps a note library on a computer you control. Connect your Entaggle app and tools to that library, and choose which notes belong there.

A few things you might wonder

Make yourself
at home.

Do I have to learn all the tag prefixes?

Start with a simple topic tag, such as #recipes. Add people, projects, dates, or other kinds when they become useful. One note can have several tags, so you can find it in more than one way.

What’s the difference between the app and a Hub?

The app is where you write, read, and organize. A Hub is an optional home for a note library on a computer you control. You can use the app with notes on your device without setting up a Hub.

Can I use Entaggle without AI?

Yes. Writing, tags, text search, and organization work without AI. You can also choose cloud sync for a note while keeping outside AI access off.

Will everything work without internet access?

You can work with notes stored on your device offline. Cloud sync, outside AI services, remote Hubs, and content loaded from other websites need a connection.

Try a starting point

Keep your workspace on one computer, including its apps, Hub, files, and local models. Outside AI can be added separately.

Where you work

Select each client you use. A VS Code-only workflow needs no Entaggle Desktop App. My hardware or Cloud can connect multiple devices.

The Hub host is separate from the apps you use to reach it. A phone or web browser can connect to either host.

Storage & files

Choose Cloud to access the Cloud library. A locally launched MCP server still uses that Cloud library.

Databases belong to their services and appear automatically. Vault and Mirror need a Hub.

Reach your Hub

Choose My hardware to connect other devices to this Hub. Cloud sync is not required.

Optional when your Hub already has a reachable network or secure remote address.

Tools you use

Runs on a computer independently of the Entaggle Desktop App. Can use files, Hubs, Cloud, or its local MCP bridge.

Note files stored on your computer. No Hub is required. Cloud upload is a separate per-note choice.

The VS Code extension can work with local files independently of a Hub or the Desktop App.

AI, if you want it

Clients ask the Hub, which calls the local AI running on its computer.

Requests to your AI provider pass through Entaggle Cloud, even when your notes stay local.

Client → Entaggle Cloud → AI Provider. This needs the hosted service, but not Cloud note storage.

Optional text-generation fallback to an outside AI provider with access keys configured on the Hub. Local-only requests must refuse outside fallback.

AI routes are separate from Cloud note storage. Switch the diagram to AI & MCP to follow them.

Connect an assistant

Choose Cloud to access the Cloud library. A locally launched MCP server still uses that Cloud library.

VS Code AI → extension → local files / Hub, local MCP, or Entaggle Cloud. Note context returns to the assistant; its model may run outside your hardware.

Direct assistant-to-Hub MCP access is not available yet. The available Entaggle MCP Server connects to the Cloud note library, not the Hub library.

Choose standalone MCP for the Cloud library, or VS Code AI tools for your active note source.

Entaggle Desktop App

Use the desktop client with a local Hub or a reachable remote Hub. Cloud notes and Cloud AI are optional connections.

The Desktop App and the Hub are separate components. A local Hub and a server Hub are deployments of the same note service.

Meet every system component

Entaggle Cloud is the hosted service for notes, sync, and AI. Entaggle Hub is the self-hosted note service; “local Hub” and “server Hub” describe where the same software runs.

Saving a clip and requesting AI are separate flows. A write-only Hub token can capture notes without reading the library.

Entaggle CloudHosted notes, sync & AIThe hosted service provides Cloud notes, sync, and AI requests. Requests using your own AI provider key and managed Cloud AI both pass through this service.

Using Cloud AI does not automatically store the source note in the Cloud Database. It does send request context through the hosted service.

Entaggle HubSelf-hosted personal note serverThe same Hub software runs on your computer or a server you control. Each Hub owns its note library and database, and can provide Vault, Mirror, and local text generation.

Hub notes are excluded from Cloud Sync. Keeping the Hub reachable and running is necessary for its remote clients.

Entaggle Tunnel ServiceRemote access to your HubThe Hub connects to the Tunnel Service. Its secure address and a Hub access token let phones, browsers, and other clients reach it without changing your router settings.

The service is a network bridge, not note storage or synchronization. The relay can read the traffic it forwards. The library stays on the Hub.

Entaggle MCP ServerAI tools for your Cloud notesThe standalone MCP server gives assistants access to note tools. It can run on your computer or remotely; both connect to the Cloud note library. Running it locally does not connect it to a Hub.

Tool results return to the calling AI client and may reach its model provider. Optional AI-powered search can also send content to an outside provider when configured and permitted.

AI clientAssistant connected to your notesThe assistant initiates tool calls to Entaggle MCP Server, then uses the returned note context with its own model. Its model connection is separate from Entaggle’s provider settings.

Running MCP on your computer does not mean notes or AI processing stay there. The standalone server accesses the Cloud library.

VS Code AIAssistant invoking Entaggle toolsThe assistant calls the extension’s registered search/fetch tools. The extension supplies context from its active note provider, local MCP connection, or Entaggle Cloud.

Your assistant controls where its model runs. Local files can still leave the computer as tool results.

On-device storageSeparate storage for each clientEach app or browser maintains its own local note storage. This node represents those separate stores, not a database shared by all the apps.

The per-note “Only this device” permission blocks Hub and AI. Use “My devices and my own AI” for notes intended for a Hub or trusted local runtime.

Hub DatabaseNote storage owned by this HubThe Hub stores its note library in its own database. Each additional Hub has a separate database and separate access tokens.

No Cloud Database is involved in Hub Sync. A tunnel only forwards the requests to the Hub.

Entaggle DatabaseShared by Cloud and MCPEntaggle Cloud and the standalone Entaggle MCP Server both use this database for the Cloud note library. MCP connects to it even when running on your computer.

Running MCP locally does not switch its note source to a Hub or local files.

Realtime Messaging ServiceConfigured note-update deliveryChanges made through Cloud and MCP can be sent to other connected clients. The database remains the source of stored notes.

Updates can contain note content, not only notifications. Delivery depends on configuration and connectivity; this is not Hub Sync.

Local Note FilesNotes saved on your computerThe VS Code extension reads and edits local note files without a Hub. Notes explicitly chosen for Cloud sync can be uploaded through the extension’s Cloud connection.

These files are separate from the Hub Vault and generated Mirror output. Local storage does not itself authorize sending file content to an AI client.

VaultEditable note folder ↔ HubThe Hub synchronizes a note folder in both directions. Outside file edits are watched and indexed back into the Hub.

The folder belongs on the Hub host. This is distinct from the VS Code extension’s independent local note files.

MirrorHub → generated exportsThe Hub writes exports of notes matching a tag pattern to a chosen directory.

One-way generated output. Edit source notes; regenerated output can replace file edits.

Local AI RuntimeAI running on your hardwareClients can ask the Hub to use its local AI, or connect directly to local AI on a reachable computer. Processing happens on that computer, including when the client is a phone.

Local-only requests must not fall through to outside providers. Choose a connection you trust and review each note’s permissions.

AI ProviderAI hosted by an outside providerOutside model services receive requests through Entaggle Cloud, configured Hub fallback, or the AI client’s own model connection. MCP may separately use a provider for AI-powered search.

These routes are distinct. The diagram labels each selected route; no generic MCP-to-chat-model or direct client-to-frontier-model path is assumed.

Hub MCP status: Direct assistant-to-Hub MCP access is not available yet. Running the standalone MCP Server locally still connects it to the Cloud note library; adding a tunnel does not add MCP access to a Hub.

What this setup means

A workspace on one computer

This is a planning guide. Apply storage destinations, note privacy, and connection settings in the app.

  • Entaggle Hub runs on your computer, with its own note database. Local and server Hubs are the same product.
  • Allow access from the Entaggle Web App in your Hub settings. Each connected Hub needs its own token.
  • Local model processing happens on a computer you control. Allow “My devices and my own AI” for the notes you want to use, even in a one-computer setup.
  • No outside AI is included. Writing, tags, and text search can stay within the chosen storage setup.
